Sixers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. prioritises family stability over spontaneous moves in free agency
Oubre emphasises the importance of finding a team where his children can call home rather than pursuing personal accolades

Philadelphia 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. has publicly outlined his approach to the upcoming free agency period following the team's Round 2 sweep loss to the New York Knicks. The 11-year veteran, who averaged 14.1 points and 5.0 rebounds this season, stated that his primary motivation for seeking a new contract is to secure a stable environment for his family, rather than pursuing spontaneous moves or personal accolades.
While expressing satisfaction with his tenure in Philadelphia, Oubre emphasised that his priority is ensuring his family does not have to uproot or figure things out on the fly. He noted that he is ready for whatever outcome occurs, stating that the result of the season is already written and accepting the conclusion of the campaign.
The forward reflected on his career trajectory, noting that despite averaging 20 points in his final season with the Charlotte Hornets, he faced limited contract offers, a lesson he has learned from. Oubre confirmed he will continue to grind and improve his game, but framed his free agency strategy around ensuring his family does not have to face uncertainty regarding their living arrangements.
Oubre joined the Sixers in the 2023 offseason after a productive final season with the Charlotte Hornets, where he averaged 20.3 points. During his time in Philadelphia, he averaged 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists, shooting a career-high 36.0 per cent from three-point range.
The 2025-26 NBA season concluded with the Philadelphia 76ers finishing 45-37. The team achieved a historic Round 1 comeback victory against the Boston Celtics but was subsequently swept in Round 2 by the New York Knicks.
Oubre is an 11-year veteran in the league who stated he loves playing in Philadelphia but acknowledged it is not his first rodeo. He emphasised the importance of finding a team where his children can call home, prioritising family stability and comfort over his own spontaneous lifestyle.
