A violent altercation at a Grand Slam baseball tournament in Starkville, Mississippi, has resulted in the termination of Darrell Holley, a lieutenant and coach with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred shortly after Holley's under-14 team, SPC Select 14U, lost a game 13-5.
Video footage of the event suggests the conflict began when Holley appeared to elbow umpire Jeff Akins near the pitchers' mound. The altercation escalated into a physical exchange involving punching, with Holley's son also becoming involved in the fight. Both men were subsequently arrested and charged with misdemeanor fighting by Starkville police.
In the wake of the incident, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office issued a statement confirming that Holley has been terminated. Sheriff Shank Phelps cited the department's zero-tolerance policy regarding Holley's conduct as the reason for the dismissal. This action underscores the institutional stance against such behaviour within the law enforcement ranks.
Tournament director Mike Narmour condemned the event as "stupidity all the way around," noting that there is no place for such fighting in either youth or adult sports. Although Narmour was away from the venue when the brawl broke out, he attributed blame to the umpire, the coach, and the involved children, emphasising that the incident took place in front of other participants.
