Shanahan set for sideline return in 49ers exhibition opener

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed he will lead the team on the sideline for their exhibition opener against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night. The announcement, made on Saturday, marks his return to full operational duties following a serious car crash on 14 July that resulted in multiple injuries.

Shanahan, 46, sustained a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and a facial laceration requiring over 40 stitches. He was treated at a local hospital and released the same day. While he described himself as "nearly fully recovered," he acknowledged that the concussion symptoms are lingering, specifically citing headaches and fatigue as ongoing issues.

The coach has attended daily practices throughout the training camp period but has operated on a limited basis to manage his energy levels. He noted that while loud music, which previously caused discomfort, is no longer an issue, he has had to be selective about his activities. Shanahan admitted he has not always adhered to his standard routine due to the fatigue associated with his recovery.

Despite these limitations, Shanahan stated he has not missed any critical aspects of his role. He has reviewed film with coaches and players every day and has led a few team meetings, though he noted that extensive meetings tend to exacerbate his fatigue. He emphasized that the film review and practice supervision are the most important components of his job, which he has maintained consistently.

Assistant head coach Chris Foerster has assisted with coaching duties during Shanahan’s recovery. The 49ers are now preparing for a joint practice with the Titans on Tuesday, followed by the exhibition game. Shanahan indicated that while he is doing "real good," the removal of his cast and complete resolution of symptoms remain pending.
