Investigation into attack on family in Ushikawa Town expands

Police in Tochigi Prefecture have arrested an 18-year-old male high school student from Kanagawa Prefecture in connection with the robbery-murder incident in Ushikawa Town. The suspect was taken into custody on May 30 on suspicion of violating the Employment Security Act, according to NHK News Japan.

The arrest marks the seventh detention in the investigation into the attack on a family of three, which resulted in deaths and injuries. Authorities stated that the suspect was involved in the incident, with the timeline indicating his involvement occurred around the day prior to his arrest on May 29.

Unlike previous suspects in the case, this individual is not currently charged with the violent crimes themselves. Instead, the charge relates to a breach of labour regulations, suggesting a potential logistical or procedural role in the events surrounding the attack. The specific nature of his involvement remains under investigation.

The case has drawn significant attention as police continue to pursue those responsible for the violence in the residential area. Earlier in the investigation, a 48-year-old suspect was publicly wanted, with authorities suggesting he may have led the incident. The addition of this eighth individual to the net of suspects indicates a broadening scope in the police inquiry.

The arrest comes amidst a busy news cycle in Japan, with severe heatwaves expected to continue across the country and Typhoon 6 forecast to approach the southern islands. Unrelated to the Tochigi case, police also arrested an 85-year-old driver in Nagoya for a fatal hit-and-run that killed two pedestrians on the same day.
