Republic of Serbia joins international framework for civil space exploration

The Republic of Serbia is set to sign the Artemis Accords during a ceremony at NASA Headquarters in Washington on Thursday, July 16. The event, scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT, will mark Serbia as the 69th country to join the international framework governing civil space exploration.

NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson will host the proceedings. He will be joined by Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić, and Wesley Brooks, the U.S. State Department Assistant Secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.

Established in 2020 by NASA and the U.S. State Department alongside seven founding nations, the Artemis Accords provide a set of practical principles designed to enhance safety, transparency, and coordination among participating nations. The initiative was launched in response to increasing lunar and deep-space activities by both government agencies and private companies.

The accords outline standards for civil space exploration on the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. By signing the document, Serbia commits to these principles, aligning its space activities with the broader international community’s efforts to ensure responsible and cooperative exploration.
