Senegal’s World Cup 2026 team preview: Players to watch, group, squad list
Coach Pape Thiaw must trim roster before Group I campaign begins

Senegal have unveiled a preliminary 28-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, leaving coach Pape Thiaw with the task of reducing the list by two players before the tournament commences. The Lions of Teranga enter the competition as the highest-ranked African nation and are positioned as serious contenders to lift the trophy. Thiaw, who succeeded Aliou Cisse in late 2024, has overseen an unbeaten qualifying campaign and a recent 3-1 victory over England at Wembley, establishing the team as a formidable force on the international stage.

Captain Sadio Mane, Senegal’s all-time top scorer with 53 goals in 126 appearances, is expected to retire from international football following the tournament. The 34-year-old forward, who currently plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, recorded 10 goals and six assists in the domestic league this season. Despite a decline in pace, Mane retains significant leadership qualities and technical ability, having been named African Cup of Nations player of the tournament earlier this year after guiding Senegal to the final.

Thiaw’s tenure has been marked by both tactical success and administrative controversy. While he led the team to an undefeated qualification and AFCON victory, his decision to withdraw players from the pitch during the final against Morocco drew sharp criticism. The Confederation of African Football subsequently stripped Senegal of the title following the protest, a decision that Thiaw must navigate carefully as he prepares for the physical and psychological demands of the World Cup.

The squad features a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent familiar with Europe’s major leagues. Nicolas Jackson, currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea, provides a physical presence in attack, while Ismaila Sarr, who helped Crystal Palace secure FA Cup and Europa League success, offers pace on the wing. In defence, 35-year-old Kalidou Koulibaly brings vast experience, and young midfielders such as Sunderland’s Habib Diarra and 18-year-old Bara Ndiaye of Bayern Munich add depth to the central areas.

Senegal have been drawn in Group I, a fixture list that includes matches against France, Norway, and Iraq. The campaign begins on June 16 against France in New Jersey, followed by a clash with Norway on June 22, also in New Jersey, and a final group match against Iraq in Toronto on June 26. Thiaw’s side will need to manage the age of key stars and the inconsistency of some creative players as they face what is widely considered one of the toughest groups in the tournament.
