Malfunctioning ticket scanners further exacerbated the situation, with some accredited media members denied entry or redirected to accreditation centres.
FIFA had advised media members via email 48 hours prior to the final to arrive as early as six hours before kick-off, warning of road closures starting 150 minutes before the match. Despite these warnings and gates opening at 11:00 local time, four hours before the scheduled 15:00 kick-off, attendees faced substantial bottlenecks. Al Jazeera reporters experienced a two-hour wait to clear the initial security perimeter, while other media members reported waits of three hours or more.
The logistical strain was intensified by the arrival of President Trump’s helicopter next to the stadium, which triggered heightened security protocols involving Secret Service officers. The presence of the US president led to enhanced inspection procedures that overwhelmed the venue’s entry points. Numerous media personnel were denied entry at the security perimeter and sent to the stadium’s accreditation centre, with one reporter denied entry despite holding valid tournament accreditation.
Fans also reported significant delays, with online accounts describing waits of two hours or more despite advice to arrive four hours early. The frustration was compounded by malfunctioning ticket scanners that slowed processing times in the heat. Nevertheless, by the time players from Spain and Argentina took the field approximately 45 minutes before kick-off, a substantial portion of the stadium was filled, including the overwhelming majority of both teams’ allocated supporters’ sections.
These disruptions echo previous logistical challenges for major football events on US soil. In 2024, the Copa America final in Miami Gardens, Florida, experienced delays of more than 75 minutes due to overwhelmed personnel and unticketed fans rushing turnstiles.
