Secret Service-level security for NBA Finals with Trump attending Game 3
Security chief warns of airport-style screening and strict road closures at Madison Square Garden

United States President Donald Trump’s attendance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals has triggered a comprehensive security overhaul at Madison Square Garden, prompting the cancellation of public gatherings and imposing strict entry protocols on fans. The New York Police Department confirmed on Sunday that the permit for the official outdoor watch party at Plaza33 was denied in consultation with the Secret Service, effectively clearing the streets surrounding the arena for the presidential visit.

Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi outlined the heightened measures, which include hard street closures in the immediate vicinity of the venue and a strict no-bag policy. Ticket holders have been advised to arrive at least two hours before tip-off to navigate screening procedures comparable to airport security. The Secret Service emphasised that these protocols are necessary to manage the presence of the president at the self-styled “World’s Most Famous Arena”.

The security escalation coincides with heightened tensions in the city following a recent stabbing incident at New York Penn Station, the transit hub located directly beneath the basketball arena. While local subway and Long Island Rail Road services are expected to continue uninterrupted, the proximity of the station to the venue has made it a focal point for security operations. The NYPD stated that the watch party ban was implemented in full coordination with federal agencies due to the presidential visit, though they indicated that public gatherings may resume for Game 4 on Wednesday.

On the court, the New York Knicks hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after winning two road games against the San Antonio Spurs. The series has drawn significant commercial attention, with resale tickets on StubHub topping $9,000 as of Saturday night. Despite the security focus, the Knicks’ historic run has energised the city, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a lifelong fan, confirming he plans to attend the game. Mamdani urged fans to celebrate responsibly, noting that police arrested 17 individuals, including one who struck an officer, during a previous celebration.

The event marks a notable intersection of sport and governance, with Trump becoming the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl in his second term. The logistical challenges of hosting a head of state at a major sporting event are not new; thousands of attendees faced delays at the US Open men’s tennis final last September due to similar security checks. As the Knicks aim to secure their first title since 1973, the immediate focus remains on managing the influx of fans and ensuring the safety of the venue amidst the heightened security posture.
