What to know about Cole Allen, alleged WH correspondents’ dinner shooter
Cole Tomas Allen arrested following armed attack that forced evacuation of President Trump and cabinet members

Police in the United States have arrested 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen following an armed breach at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC. The incident forced the immediate evacuation of US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and senior cabinet members who were attending the gala. Secret Service agents engaged the suspect in the hotel lobby, successfully neutralising the threat before Allen could cause further harm.

The attack occurred when Allen stormed the lobby and fired weapons, prompting guests to take cover under tables. President Trump later described the incident as an assault by a "would-be assassin" and confirmed that Secret Service teams had taken down the suspect. Security footage released by the President shows Allen running past officers who were in the process of disassembling metal detectors at the time of the breach.

Federal campaign finance records indicate that Allen had previously contributed $25 to a Democratic Party political action committee supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Despite this political history, President Trump stated that the attack was unlikely to be linked to the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, noting that he did not believe the conflict was a motivating factor based on current knowledge.

Investigators believe Allen was staying as a guest at the Washington Hilton, a circumstance that allowed him to bypass public access restrictions and reach the lobby where the attack unfolded. The hotel had been closed to the public since 18:00 GMT in anticipation of the event, with entry restricted to guests, ticket holders, and those with specific invitations.

Allen, a teacher and mechanical engineer from Torrance, California, has been identified by law enforcement sources. His background includes recognition as "Teacher of the Month" in December 2024 by C2 Education in Torrance. While his LinkedIn profile lists him as a computer scientist and independent game developer, his specific motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Security Director Sean Curran stated that the multilayered protection plan developed by the Secret Service worked as intended during the evening. However, the Metropolitan Police Department's interim chief, Jeffery Carroll, noted that all eyes would now turn to whether sufficient security measures were in place given the nature of the breach. Allen remains in custody as authorities determine his intent.
