Seattle Reign capitalise on defensive errors to halt San Diego Wave’s momentum
First-half headers from Maddie Mercado and Jordyn Bugg extend San Diego’s winless streak to three matches and mark their sixth shutout of the season.
Seattle Reign FC extended their dominance over San Diego Wave FC with a 2-0 victory at Snapdragon Stadium, exploiting early defensive vulnerabilities to secure all three points. The result marks the sixth time this season San Diego has been shut out and extends their winless run to three consecutive matches, casting a shadow over a side that began the year with strong momentum.
The decisive period arrived in the opening 20 minutes, where Seattle scored two headers within a three-minute span. Maddie Mercado, a San Diego native, opened the scoring in the 17th minute after capitalising on a one-on-one situation created by midfielder Ainsley McCammon. Mercado, who leads Seattle with five goals this season, finished from close range before Bugg, another local player, tapped in a rebound from a corner kick in the 20th minute. McCammon was instrumental in the attack, providing assists for both goals.
San Diego Wave FC coach Jonas Eidevall attributed the deficit to a slow start and specific failures in set-piece defence. He noted that while the team created opportunities later in the match, the early concessions put them in a difficult position. The Wave finished with 22 shot attempts and majority possession but were unable to break through a resilient Seattle backline, which held firm after the initial surge.
The match also featured significant milestones and personnel changes for both clubs. For San Diego, 18-year-old forward Melanie Barcenas became the second-youngest player in the league to reach 50 regular-season appearances. Goalkeeper Sandra Paños made her NWSL debut, replacing Luisa Agudelo, and recorded three saves despite conceding two goals. Meanwhile, Seattle’s Claudia Dickey secured the clean sheet with nine saves, maintaining a defensive record that has been a key factor in their recent form.
Seattle’s victory comes after a mixed return from the international break, where they suffered losses to NC Courage and Gotham FC. The win against San Diego allows them to reset before their next fixtures. San Diego, meanwhile, faces a challenging two-game road trip, beginning with a match against the Washington Spirit on 2 August, followed by a trip to New York to face Gotham FC on 7 August.
