Seahawks try left-footed punters for opponent preparation
Seattle brought in Luke Elzinga and Colton Spangler to help prepare for upcoming opponents who use left-footed punters.
The Seattle Seahawks brought in punters Luke Elzinga and Colton Spangler for tryouts this week. Neither had been signed to the practice squad at the time Yahoo Sports reported the move.
Yahoo Sports described the tryouts as preparation for opponents with left-footed punters. Seattle’s regular punter, Michael Dickson, is right-footed and was not listed on the injury report.
Left-footed punts spin in the opposite direction to right-footed punts, which may challenge returners accustomed to reading the more familiar spin.
The report identifies Washington’s Tress Way, San Francisco’s Corliss Waitman and Kansas City’s Matt Araiza as left-footed punters Seattle expects to face. It also says the Seahawks used similar preparation before playing New Orleans last season.
