Reports have renewed scrutiny of Pep Guardiola’s past defence of Manchester City, following claims that an independent panel found the club responsible for most of the Premier League’s financial-rule charges. The Premier League has not officially confirmed the reported finding, and the commission’s written judgment has not been published.
The league brought 115 alleged charges over conduct between 2009 and 2018, as well as an alleged failure to co-operate with its investigation from 2018 to 2023. City has said the process remains ongoing and confidential. No sanctions have been decided.
The Sporting News, in an article carried by Yahoo Sports, revisits Guardiola’s public responses to questions about the allegations. In 2019, after City won the FA Cup, he challenged a reporter’s question about whether he deserved his wages.
In 2020, after UEFA found City in breach of Financial Fair Play rules, Guardiola said he had asked the club’s board to explain the matter and would leave if officials had lied to him. City’s appeal was later upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Guardiola left after 10 seasons, having won 20 trophies, and was replaced by Enzo Maresca. The article does not link his departure to the Premier League case.
