Seahawks lock in Leonard Williams with $90 million extension

The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly agreed to a three-year, $90 million contract extension with defensive tackle Leonard Williams, a deal that positions him among the highest-paid players at his position in the National Football League. According to sources cited by ESPN, the agreement includes $56 million in guaranteed money, a significant financial commitment from the organisation as it looks to stabilise its roster beyond the immediate term.

Williams, who was scheduled to enter free agency in 2027, is now tied for the fifth-highest average annual income for a defensive tackle in the league. The move places him behind only a select group of elite interior defenders, including Jalen Carter, Quinnen Williams, Jeffery Simmons, and Chris Jones. For the Seahawks, the extension serves as a strategic lock-in for a player who has become central to their defensive identity.

At 32, Williams is entering a phase of his career where longevity and sustained impact are often scrutinised. However, the Seahawks are betting that he will remain a dominant force into his mid-30s. This confidence is supported by recent polling conducted by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, in which league executives, scouts, and coaches voted Williams the NFL’s best defensive tackle. One coordinator described him as “the most important player on that Super Bowl team,” highlighting his perceived value to the reigning Super Bowl LX champions.

The extension comes as Williams enters the final year of his previous three-year, $64.5 million deal, which he signed in March 2024. Seattle originally acquired Williams from the New York Giants in October 2023, exchanging a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick for the veteran lineman. Since joining the Seahawks, Williams has made the Pro Bowl in each of his two full seasons and earned second-team All-Pro honours in 2025.

His performance with Seattle has been marked by both pass-rush production and playmaking ability. In 2024, Williams recorded 11 sacks and returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown, a feat that stands as the longest pick-six by a defensive lineman in NFL history. He followed that season with seven regular-season sacks and an additional sack in the playoffs during the team’s run to the Super Bowl title.

Over his 11-season career, Williams has accumulated 61.5 sacks in 175 regular-season games. His journey to Seattle included stints with the New York Jets, who drafted him in 2015, and the New York Giants, who acquired him in 2019. The new contract signals a continued institutional investment in his ability to anchor the league’s top-ranked scoring defense.
