Scottish League Cup: Montrose and Ayr United deal blows to Premiership hopes

The Scottish League Cup group stage has delivered significant structural shifts, with Championship sides Montrose and Ayr United securing victories over Premiership opponents Dundee United and Falkirk. These results have complicated the progression prospects for the higher-ranked clubs, undermining their standing in the competition. Dundee United’s campaign faced immediate scrutiny following the result. The top-flight side, managed by Jim Goodwin, had previously required a stoppage-time penalty to defeat Stirling Albion on the preceding Saturday. Their inability to convert that momentum into a group stage win against third-tier Montrose has placed their advancement hopes in the balance.

Fellow Premiership club Falkirk also suffered a setback, losing away to second-tier Ayr United. Kevin Holt scored the winning goal for Ayr, while Falkirk missed a penalty during the match. Kilmarnock drew 0-0 with Raith Rovers at Beechwood Park, where they played due to surface works at Rugby Park, before claiming a bonus point via a penalty shootout. Other notable results included Peterhead defeating Elgin City 3-1, Partick Thistle beating Forfar Athletic 4-0, and Livingston winning 2-0 away to Brechin City.
