The match dynamics shifted dramatically after Braga midfielder Mario Dorgeles was dismissed for a professional foul on Jan-Niklas Beste. Although Dorgeles had scored the visitors' last-gasp winner in the first leg, the straight red card left Braga reduced to ten men for the remainder of the contest. Freiburg capitalised on this numerical advantage immediately, taking the lead on the night through a rebound goal from Jean-Baptiste Gorby.
