Sanchez breaks Phillies record with historic scoreless innings streak
The left-hander’s dominance in May 2026 has placed him among the top ten in Major League Baseball history and made him a leading contender for the National League Cy Young Award.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sanchez has established a new franchise record for the longest scoreless innings streak, surpassing the 41 innings set by Grover Alexander in 1911. Sanchez’s active streak has reached 44.2 innings, ranking seventh all-time in the Live Ball Era, which began in 1920. This achievement marks the longest scoreless pitching streak in Major League Baseball since 2015.
The record was secured during five consecutive starts in May 2026, where Sanchez pitched at least seven innings without allowing a run in each appearance. On May 27, his streak officially surpassed Zac Gallen’s 44.1 innings from 2022 to claim the seventh spot in the Live Ball Era. Entering his June 3 start against the San Diego Padres, Sanchez holds the top earned run average among qualified starters in MLB.
Sanchez’s performance has positioned him as a leading contender for the National League Cy Young Award. Entering the June 3 matchup, he ranks second in MLB in both innings pitched and strikeouts, while holding the highest wins above replacement (WAR) among qualified starters. His statistical profile for the 2026 season includes a 1.62 ERA, 86 strikeouts, and a 1.97 fielding independent pitching (FIP) across 72.1 innings.
The Philadelphia organisation has recognised Sanchez’s elevation to elite status through significant financial commitments. In March, Sanchez signed a six-year, $104 million contract extension running through 2032, with a club option for 2033. This deal effectively adds approximately $30 million to his previous four-year, $22.5 million agreement, bringing his average annual value to $17.33 million.
Sanchez’s current form follows a difficult start to the 2026 season, contrasting sharply with his emergence as an ace in 2025. His recent dominance includes an eight-shutout-inning performance against the Guardians on May 23, 2026, which was highlighted by MLB Performances. The Phillies’ left-handed ace continues to climb the historical record books as he approaches the end of his current start.
