Samsung splits foldable strategy with new Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra
The standard Z Fold 8 adopts a shorter, wider profile, while the Ultra variant retains a taller, slimmer design with superior imaging hardware.
Samsung has unveiled its latest foldable portfolio at Galaxy Unpacked in London, introducing a bifurcated approach to its large-screen devices. The Korean technology giant launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, marking a significant divergence in design philosophy and hardware specifications between the two models. Both devices are scheduled for an official market release in August, with preorders now open.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8, priced at $1,899.99, introduces a new form factor characterised by a shorter and wider footprint. When folded, it measures 123.9 by 81.9 by 9.7mm, offering a more compact external profile with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner screen. This design aims to address previous criticisms regarding narrow outer displays, though the device’s width may impact pocketability. It is available in Graphite, Cream, Lavender, and an online-exclusive Pistachio finish.
In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, starting at $2,099.99, retains the taller, slimmer profile of its predecessor. Measuring 158.4 by 72.8 by 8.9mm when folded, it features a larger 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner main display. The Ultra variant is slightly heavier at 215 grams compared to the standard model’s 201 grams, and it offers higher resolution screens across both panels. Colour options for the Ultra include Graphite, Cream, Violet Shadow, and an online-exclusive Green Shadow.
Under the hood, both devices share identical processing power, utilising the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This marks a strategic shift for Samsung, moving away from the Exynos 2500 chips used in previous generations to ensure consistent performance globally. Both models also feature a Flex Titanium display with improved durability and flexibility, alongside an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance.
The primary differentiators lie in imaging and battery capacity. The Z Fold 8 Ultra boasts a 200MP main camera and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, whereas the standard Z Fold 8 simplifies its imaging array to a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide lens, omitting the telephoto component. Powering the Ultra is a 5,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, compared to the 4,800mAh unit in the standard model. Both support 45W wired charging and Qi2 compatibility, though neither includes built-in magnets for accessory attachment.
