Defensive end’s hamstring strain occurred prior to Hall of Fame ceremony; coach signals potential regular-season absence

New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore confirmed on Tuesday that defensive end Cam Jordan’s hamstring injury could extend into the regular season, marking a significant disruption for the franchise’s defensive line ahead of the upcoming campaign. Moore stated that the training staff intends to exercise patience, allowing the injury to take its course while collecting further medical data throughout the pre-season period.

The injury sustained on Thursday occurred just before Jordan travelled to Canton, Ohio, to attend former teammate Drew Brees’ Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. The timing of the setback has raised questions regarding the veteran player’s availability, particularly given his historical reliability and the team’s strategic planning for the edge rusher position.

Jordan, 37, has demonstrated exceptional durability throughout his career with the Saints, having missed only two of 245 regular-season games since being selected in the first round of the 2011 draft. He entered the recent offseason as a free agent before signing a one-year contract, expressing a desire to conclude his career in New Orleans. While he has suggested this season may be his final one, he has not ruled out a return in 2027 provided he remains physically capable and in demand.

Despite his reduced snap counts in recent years, which dropped to 50 per cent last season compared to peaks of 93 per cent in 2014 and 2017, Jordan remained a key contributor, starting all 17 games and leading the team with 10.5 sacks. Moore acknowledged the need for depth at the position, citing players such as Chase Young, Carl Granderson, Anfernee Jennings, Tyree Wilson, and Fadil Diggs as vital components of the unit.

Moore emphasised that the Saints view their edge rusher depth as a strength, noting that multiple players will be required to contribute throughout the season regardless of individual availability. The coaching staff remains focused on a thorough evaluation of Jordan’s recovery rather than rushing his return, aiming to ensure long-term effectiveness over short-term gains.

In addition to Jordan’s status, the Saints reported that veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux rolled an ankle during practice. Moore indicated that details regarding the severity of Godchaux’s injury are still pending, adding another layer of uncertainty to the defensive line’s preparation for the season opener.
