Rookie wide receiver’s training camp setback forces New Orleans to evaluate internal depth and external market options

The New Orleans Saints’ early-season planning has been disrupted by the loss of prized rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. According to a report from NFL Media, Tyson is expected to miss approximately two months following a hamstring injury sustained during a training-camp practice last week. The timeline suggests he may begin the season on injured reserve as he undergoes rehabilitation.

Tyson, selected eighth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, had been performing at a high level during camp, poised to form a primary receiving duo with Chris Olave for second-year quarterback Tyler Shough. The injury occurred after Tyson landed awkwardly and was shoved from behind, a specific incident that head coach Kellen Moore clarified was unrelated to the rookie’s history of hamstring issues dating back to his college career at Colorado and Arizona State.

In Tyson’s absence, the Saints must immediately address the void in their passing attack. No. 2 receiver duties are likely to fall to DeVaughn Vele, who assumed that role after the team traded Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks at midseason last year. Vele recorded 25 catches for 293 yards and two touchdowns in his previous season, with a significant portion of his production coming in the final five games.

The coaching staff also has internal depth to draw upon, including fellow 2026 draftees Bryce Lance and Barion Brown. Both players remain on the roster and could see expanded roles during Tyson’s expected absence, which could extend into October. The Saints may also look to the free-agent market, with former Chargers wideout Keenan Allen remaining available. Allen played under Moore in 2023, catching 108 passes for 1,243 yards, though he is 34 and coming off a season where he averaged a career-low 45.7 receiving yards per game.

Alternative solutions include exploring the trade market, where speculation has linked the Saints to Patriots receiver Kayshon Boutte. However, New England’s recent acquisition of A.J. Brown and signing of Romeo Doubs may make them reluctant to part with Boutte, who is reportedly having a standout camp. The most probable outcome remains for the Saints to manage the roster internally while hoping for Tyson’s return around a month into the season.
