Colts poised to secure veteran Keenan Allen amid receiver depth concerns

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen, a move that addresses significant depth concerns following the departure of Michael Pittman Jr. The six-time Pro Bowler joins the franchise after a one-season stint with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025, having previously played for the Chicago Bears in 2024.

The signing comes after an offseason marked by scrutiny over the team’s receiving corps. Pittman Jr was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March, a move that left a void in production and veteran leadership. The Colts have done limited work to replace his output, alongside the mid-year trade of Adonai Mitchell, leaving the roster with a reliance on existing players to absorb increased volume.

Allen, 34, is considered the top free agent wide receiver on the market. Head coach Shane Steichen’s offensive system is viewed as a strong fit for the veteran, who prizes separation at the top of routes and reliable hands. While Allen is nearing the end of his career, his skill set aligns with the structural requirements of the offence, which has historically benefited from precise route running and dependable targets.

The need for reinforcement was underscored by the previous season’s struggles, where the passing game slowed considerably in the final seven games. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a fractured fibula and a torn Achilles tendon, leading to Philip Rivers taking over. The injury crisis highlighted the lack of depth, a problem that persists despite the addition of free agent Nick Westbrooke-Ikhine and rookie draft pick Deion Burks.

Existing receivers Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, and Tyler Warren are expected to see increased targets. Pierce, who is ascending to a more all-around role, could see his catch count rise significantly, while Downs and Warren are projected to build upon their previous season’s production. However, the absence of Pittman and Mitchell has left the unit vulnerable, making Allen’s potential arrival a critical component of the team’s strategic outlook.
