Sabally finds stability in reduced role with Liberty post-concussion
Satou Sabally’s move to New York has coincided with a strategic shift in her playing time, as the Liberty capitalise on her versatility while she recovers from a severe concussion.

Satou Sabally has joined the New York Liberty on a two-year, $1.67 million contract, marking a significant structural shift in her career following a severe concussion sustained during the WNBA Finals with the Phoenix Mercury. The injury, which occurred in Game 3 of the previous season’s championship series against the Las Vegas Aces, resulted in lingering symptoms that forced the German forward to miss the entire Unrivaled season and part of the current WNBA campaign.
Sabally, who previously played for the Dallas Wings and Phoenix Mercury, relocated to New York to reunite with former college teammate Sabrina Ionescu and pursue a championship in a major market. The move was made on a discount from the potential $1.2 million max contract she could have secured elsewhere, a decision Sabally attributed to the desire to play alongside familiar faces, including German national team teammate Leonie Feibich, and to be closer to her family in Germany.
Since returning from the bench, Sabally has contributed to a five-game winning streak for the Liberty, a turnaround that began after Liberty coach Chris DeMarco utilised her off the bench for the first time since 2022. Despite missing five games due to illness and a cyst, Sabally has averaged 9.3 points in 15.9 minutes per game this season, a notable decrease from her 16.3 points in 26.6 minutes per game last year with Phoenix.
The adjustment to a reduced role has coincided with a broader personal evolution for Sabally, who publicly embraced a shaved head in March to honour her friend Soniva, who has alopecia. She has also begun wearing bold red lipstick during games, describing it as "war paint," and has cited the offseason as a period of self-reflection that has left her feeling more grounded and patient.
Liberty coach Chris DeMarco has expressed satisfaction with Sabally’s performance in her current role, noting her versatility and positive attitude. While he remains open to moving her back into the starting lineup as her health improves, the team has benefited from her impact off the bench, with star Breanna Stewart praising Sabally’s ability to bring energy without rushing her return to full form.
