Aryna Sabalenka has reached the US Open quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Taylor Townsend in New York.

Townsend broke Sabalenka three times during the top-ranked player’s first four service games, putting pressure on the two-time defending champion early in their first meeting.

Sabalenka regained control after the difficult opening phase, winning the match in straight sets. She will next face either Linda Noskova or Marta Kostyuk for a place in the semi-finals.

ESPN reported that 10 Americans reached the men’s and women’s fourth round, the most at a Grand Slam since the 2002 US Open.
