Rutgers secures wide receiver Mugerwa, dealing blow to Michigan State Big Ten ambitions
Arnold Mugerwa’s commitment to Rutgers University cancels a scheduled visit to Michigan State, as the 247Sports-ranked prospect selects the Scarlet Knights over a field of notable offers.

Rutgers University has secured the commitment of Arnold Mugerwa, a three-star wide receiver prospect from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, marking a significant shift in the Big Ten Conference’s recruiting landscape for the 2027 class. The announcement follows an official visit to the Scarlet Knights last weekend, effectively ending Mugerwa’s recruitment by Michigan State University.
Mugerwa, who holds a recruiting rating of 88.50 in the 247Sports composite system, is ranked as the No. 55 wide receiver nationally and the No. 13 player from Pennsylvania. His decision to join Rutgers comes after evaluating offers from a wide array of programs, including Michigan State, Kentucky, Florida State, Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Duke, Maryland, NC State, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
The commitment carries immediate logistical implications for Michigan State, which had scheduled an official visit for Mugerwa in late June. While initial reports suggested the visit might proceed, social media updates from Emmett Matasovsky confirm that Mugerwa is cancelling his trip to East Lansing on June 19. This cancellation underscores the finality of his decision to align with Rutgers rather than pursue further engagement with the Spartans.
For Michigan State, the loss of Mugerwa represents a notable setback in their efforts to bolster their receiving corps. The Spartans remain active in the recruiting trail for other wide receiver prospects, with their priority now shifting toward locking in remaining targets. With Mugerwa now off the board and heading to a fellow Big Ten institution, Michigan State must consolidate its efforts on other high-priority recruits to maintain its competitive standing in the conference.
The move highlights the intense intra-conference competition within the Big Ten, where programs frequently vie for the same talent pools. By securing Mugerwa, Rutgers strengthens its roster for the 2027 class, while Michigan State faces the challenge of adjusting its recruiting strategy to fill the void left by the prospect’s departure.
