Russian barrages kill six as diplomatic signals clash with frontline escalation
Casualties reported across Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa, with further incidents in Kherson, Rivne, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhia regions, as Moscow claims significant air defence successes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described a sustained Russian offensive as one of the longest and most massive attacks against Ukraine, occurring despite recent diplomatic signals from the United States and Russia that the war may be nearing an end. The barrage, which began on Wednesday morning and lasted for hours, targeted Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa, alongside multiple other areas, resulting in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries.
Zelenskyy stated on Telegram that while Ukrainian soldiers are defending the country, Russia’s apparent objective is to overload air defence systems. He warned that the drone attacks could be followed by further strikes involving cruise and ballistic missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 286 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, and Rostov, as well as over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
In the Kherson region, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported that a woman was killed when a Russian drone struck a bus in Bilozerka. Meanwhile, in the Rivne region, Governor Oleksandr Koval confirmed that a drone attack killed three people and injured four others. Authorities in the Kharkiv region said a 60-year-old man died when first-person view drones attacked a community near Zolochiv, damaging two homes and several outbuildings.
Further south, Zaporizhia Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that a 76-year-old man was killed when a guided aerial bomb struck an agricultural enterprise. Fedorov noted that the blast wave and debris caused significant damage to the buildings. The attacks highlight the continued intensity of the conflict, even as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have made recent comments suggesting a potential resolution to the more than four-year war.
Trump stated on Tuesday that he believed Moscow and Kyiv would soon reach a deal to end the fighting, telling reporters before departing for a summit in Beijing that the end of the war was getting very close. Putin also indicated last weekend that Russia’s invasion was possibly coming to an end. However, hostilities persisted across the border, with Ukrainian drones causing injuries and property damage in Russia’s Bryansk and Belgorod regions, and two women killed in Russian-controlled parts of Kherson.
