Regional prosecutors have assessed that the assault involved an Iskander-type ballistic missile. The strike caused extensive damage to residential homes, commercial shops, and public buildings, disrupting local infrastructure in Merefa.
Ukrainian Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed the incident via Telegram, stating that the occupiers had attacked civilian infrastructure. He detailed that at least 10 houses, an administrative building, four shops, a car repair workshop, and a food establishment were damaged.
Casualty figures indicate that two men and three women were killed. Emergency services reported that 18 others were wounded, with four victims in serious condition requiring hospitalisation. Photos released by emergency services show damaged roofs, blown-out windows, and rescuers attending to the injured.
There was no immediate comment from Moscow regarding the specific attack. While Moscow has historically denied intentionally targeting civilians during the war, its actions have resulted in thousands of civilian deaths since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Concurrently, Ukrainian forces have been conducting drone strikes against Russian targets, including airports, naval assets, and energy infrastructure ahead of Victory Day. These long-range operations highlight the ongoing escalation of the conflict beyond the immediate front lines.
