Russell dismisses Verstappen transfer speculation as Red Bull extension confirmed
George Russell states his position at Mercedes was secure despite prolonged rumours linking Max Verstappen to the team, following the Dutch driver's contract extension until 2030.
Max Verstappen has concluded a period of significant transfer speculation by signing a contract extension with Red Bull, keeping him with the team until 2030. The announcement, made ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, resolves questions regarding the four-time world champion's future after he had been linked with both Mercedes and McLaren.
George Russell, who has been associated with Verstappen in transfer rumours since Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari in 2024, stated that his seat at Mercedes was never at risk. Russell suggested that the public narrative surrounding potential talks between Mercedes and Verstappen’s camp may have been exaggerated compared to private communications within the team.
"It was always very clear from within Mercedes what the reality was over these past couple of years," Russell said. He noted that while drivers and teams engage in discussions as part of the sport's nature, he felt "100 per cent security" with team principal Toto Wolff and the organisation.
The speculation had intensified recently, with some suggesting Verstappen might replace Russell given the strong form of Russell’s team-mate, Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the Drivers' Championship. However, Russell maintained that internal clarity at Mercedes made any such move unlikely.
At McLaren, Lando Norris addressed the possibility of Verstappen joining the reigning constructors' champions. Norris confirmed that while he would have welcomed the Dutch driver as a team-mate, his partnership with Oscar Piastri remains unchanged. The potential for a move to McLaren had appeared more plausible after Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, agreed to join the Woking-based squad.
The Formula 1 season resumes with a Sprint weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, with practice sessions scheduled for Friday. The confirmation of Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull removes a major variable from the grid’s driver market as the season progresses.
