IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals face Delhi Capitals in critical league phase encounter

Rajasthan Royals enter the final week of the Indian Premier League 2026 league phase with their playoff destiny largely in their own hands. Sitting fifth on the points table with 12 points from 11 matches, the team must secure victories in their remaining three games to guarantee a top-four finish. The stakes are elevated by a recent slump, with the Royals having lost two consecutive matches, including a prior encounter against their upcoming opponents, the Delhi Capitals.

The match against Delhi Capitals is scheduled for Sunday, 17 May 2026, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. While the Royals can dictate their own fate with three wins, the Delhi Capitals face a significantly more difficult path, requiring what the team would likely describe as a minor miracle to secure a top-four spot. The Capitals recently relied on an all-round performance from young player Madhav Tiwari to challenge the Punjab Kings’ playoff hopes.

A primary concern for the Royals’ management is a severe lack of bowling discipline, which has contributed to their recent struggles. The team has conceded more than 200 runs in each of their last four games, winning only one of those fixtures. This trend is exacerbated by a season-long issue with extras; the Royals have conceded 134 extras this season, the highest figure among all IPL 2026 teams. In their most recent defeat to the Gujarat Titans by 77 runs, the Royals yielded 19 extras in that single match.

Strike bowler Jofra Archer has been identified as a focal point of these disciplinary issues. In the match against the Gujarat Titans, Archer bowled an opening over of 11 balls that included four wides and a no-ball. He has been described as being "off the boil" in the last three games, prompting the team management to consider adjustments to the bowling combination ahead of the Delhi Capitals clash.

Director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara has emphasised the need for the team to regain a winning mindset. Speaking on the eve of the match, Sangakkara noted that while opposition teams have played well, the Royals must pull back their performance to secure the necessary victories. He stated that winning all three remaining matches would allow the Royals to "not have to wait for anyone" for a playoff spot.

The Royals are also managing squad availability and potential changes. Left-arm seamer Nandre Burger, who was omitted from the previous game, is being considered for a return. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is also expected to feature in the playing XI, potentially on the tacky surface at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Additionally, captain Riyan Parag is expected to return to lead the side after missing the previous game due to a sore hamstring.

Batting support remains critical, with the team relying on early contributions from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Sangakkara has publicly endorsed Sooryavanshi, highlighting the young batter’s game intelligence and ability to integrate with senior squad members. The onus will fall on the rest of the batting line-up, led by Dhruv Jurel, to consolidate starts and provide the necessary support to secure the wins required for playoff qualification.
