Scottish cyclist’s mother’s career-ending injury shapes his approach to elite competition

Scottish cyclist Elliot Rowe is preparing for his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow next month, drawing motivation from the abrupt end to his mother Sarah’s professional career. Rowe, 20, says the experience has instilled a pragmatic approach to his own sport, emphasising the importance of seizing opportunities in a discipline where careers can terminate suddenly.

Sarah Rowe represented Team Scotland at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Canada before competing for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Her career concluded in 1995 after she suffered a leg injury during a training run near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, an incident that occurred less than a year after her Commonwealth Games appearance.

Rowe, who currently rides for Team Visma Lease a Bike’s development squad, acknowledged the inherent fragility of professional cycling. He noted that both he and his sister were aware of the risks involved, which influenced their decision to prioritise education as a fallback while pursuing their athletic ambitions.

The Aberdeenshire rider has established a strong record at junior and under-23 levels, securing silver at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games. His recent results include a third-place finish in the men’s under-23 race at the British National Time Trial Championships and a gold and bronze medal haul at last year’s European Under-23 Championships.

Rowe joined Team Visma Lease a Bike last year and described his progression as exceeding expectations. His primary objective is to secure a professional road racing contract, aiming to transition his passion into a sustainable career. Regarding his prospects in Glasgow, he expressed confidence in winning a medal, contingent on favourable conditions.
