'Clear red' for Bosnia or 'wins the ball'? BBC pundits disagree
Former England captain and ex-referee offer divergent interpretations of incident involving Bosnia goalkeeper

A contentious moment in the 2026 World Cup match between Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina has sparked a debate among BBC pundits regarding the application of serious foul play rules. The incident occurred four minutes into the second half while Bosnia led 1-0, resulting in a 1-1 draw that ensured the co-hosts avoided defeat for the first time in seven World Cup matches.

Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj leapt to punch the ball but his follow-through fists struck Canada striker Tani Oluwaseyi in the head. Former England captain Wayne Rooney argued the contact with the temple constituted serious foul play and warranted a red card, citing the danger of potential concussion.

Conversely, former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann maintained that Vasilj played the ball first and the subsequent contact was inevitable, thus not justifying a penalty or dismissal. Cann, who served as an assistant referee in the 2014 World Cup final, stated that the goalkeeper clearly won the ball and that the incident did not meet the threshold for serious foul play.

The match was officiated by Argentine referee Facundo Tello, who awarded an offside on the play. This call meant no penalty was awarded regardless of the contact, although Vasilj could still have been dismissed for the incident.

Former France forward Olivier Giroud expressed frustration as a striker but acknowledged Cann's point that it is difficult for a goalkeeper to retract his hands after winning the ball. The BBC Sport article includes a prompt for readers to vote on whether the incident should have been a red card.
