Bucharest summons Russian ambassador and calls incident a breach of international law

A Russian drone, which was part of an overnight aerial assault on Ukraine, strayed into Romanian airspace and crashed into an apartment building in the eastern city of Galati. The incident, which occurred on the night of 28–29 May 2026, resulted in the detonation of the drone’s explosive payload on the 10th floor of the residential block.

Romanian authorities confirmed that two individuals received medical treatment for abrasions following the crash. The explosion caused a fire in the building, leading to the evacuation of approximately 70 residents. The Romanian defence ministry verified the details of the strike, noting the specific damage to the upper floors of the apartment complex.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry described the event as a serious violation of international law. In a formal diplomatic response, Bucharest summoned the Russian ambassador to address the breach of sovereignty. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from both NATO and the European Union, which characterised the strike as a reckless escalation of the ongoing conflict.

As a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Romania has utilised the alliance’s mechanisms to address the security threat. The government has formally requested that NATO expedite the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to its military, seeking to bolster its defensive posture against similar incursions.

The exact origin point of the drone launch within Russia remains unspecified in official reports. While the drone was identified as part of the broader overnight attack on Ukraine, the specific cause of its deviation into Romanian airspace, whether technical failure or navigation error, has not been confirmed.
