Rogers targets Premier League glory with Chelsea, cites Palmer partnership

Morgan Rogers has declared his intent to help Chelsea compete for top honours following his record-breaking move from Aston Villa. The 24-year-old forward, who has become the most expensive British player in history, scored on his debut in the club’s 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad. He expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to challenge for Premier League and Champions League titles, citing the positive energy surrounding the club since the appointment of Xabi Alonso.

Rogers highlighted his long-standing familiarity with teammate Cole Palmer, noting their shared history at Manchester City’s youth level and on England duty. He described Palmer as an 'artist' who excels as a passer and linker, contrasting this with his own more direct and physical style. Rogers argued that these differing qualities offset each other well, allowing the pair to understand each other’s movements instinctively and bring out the best in a competitive environment.

The forward acknowledged the weight of his transfer fee but stated he welcomes the resulting scrutiny. Rogers said he is eager to be the topic of discussion regarding England selections and club performances, regardless of whether the attention is positive or negative. He emphasised that having the keys to decide how he is spoken about gives him confidence to perform at the highest level.

Chelsea’s recent history includes the sacking of Liam Rosenior less than a month ago following an FA Cup final defeat, with interim manager Calum McFarlane overseeing the end of the previous season. Xabi Alonso’s four-year contract officially commences on 1 July, marking a fresh start for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Rogers noted that the arrival of a new manager and new players has created a sense of anticipation among the squad.

Chelsea’s next fixture is a Monday Night Football match against Fulham on 24 August. Rogers, who helped England reach the semi-finals and finish third in the recent World Cup, said he is ready to prove critics wrong and contribute to a team culture built on winning, inspired by past legends such as Eden Hazard, Didier Drogba, and Frank Lampard.
