Rockies loss ends White Sox bid for AL Central title
Colorado won 9-6 as Cleveland’s victory left Chicago two games back with one regular-season day remaining.
The Chicago White Sox’s bid for the American League Central title ended with a 9-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Hunter Goodman hit his 40th and 41st home runs for Colorado.
Chicago needed a win to remain in contention after the Cleveland Guardians beat Kansas City 11-5, moving two games ahead with one regular-season day left.
The White Sox had led or shared first place in the division from 4 July until 16 September. They are reported to be heading into the playoffs as the American League’s final wild card.
Chicago is scheduled to open a three-game road Wild Card Series against the AL West winner on Tuesday. The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros race for that division was still to be decided.
The Associated Press report carried by Yahoo Sports said Chicago would become the first team to reach the playoffs after consecutive 100-loss seasons. Colorado improved to 58-103 with its fourth win in 21 games.
