Rockies defy defensive errors to secure walk-off victory over Angels
Colorado Rockies defeat Los Angeles Angels 9-8 in nine-inning contest, highlighted by Hunter Goodman’s eighth-inning homer and Jake McCarthy’s walk-off shot.

The Colorado Rockies secured a 9-8 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night, overcoming four defensive errors and a blown save to complete a dramatic comeback. The win required two distinct rallies, including a five-run eighth inning and a walk-off home run in the ninth, as the team persisted despite significant defensive lapses.
Manager Warren Schaeffer acknowledged the chaotic nature of the contest, describing the defence as "horrendous" and the play as sloppy. However, he emphasised the squad's resilience, noting that the players maintained excellent at-bats throughout the night. Schaeffer stated that despite the errors, someone had to win the game, and the team's ability to bounce back multiple times was the defining factor.
Kyle Freeland started for Colorado, recording his 987th career strikeout to move into second place on the franchise's all-time list behind Germán Márquez. Freeland pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. His earned run average dropped slightly from 8.08 to 8.06 following the outing, though Schaeffer praised Freeland's velocity and command against a lineup featuring nine right-handed batters.
The Rockies' offensive surge began in the eighth inning when Hunter Goodman hit his 14th home run of the season to give Colorado an 8-6 lead. The team drew 10 walks and was hit by two pitches during the game, creating opportunities despite striking out 11 times. Through seven innings, the Rockies had left 10 runners on base and were just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
In the ninth inning, Jake McCarthy hit a 397-foot walk-off home run to centre field to seal the victory. Antonio Senzatela earned the win in relief, improving his record to 5-0, despite also being credited with the blown save. Angels player Tyler Freeman suffered a foot injury from a foul ball late in the game and did not return.
Tomoyuki Sugano is scheduled to start for the Rockies on Tuesday, while LHP Grayson Rodriguez will start for the Angels. Updates on the severity of Freeman's injury are expected on Tuesday.
