Rio Mayor Calls for Aviation Oversight Review After Fatal Helicopter Crash
Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere urges Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency to intensify safety measures following the deaths of a pilot and three Colombian tourists.

At least four people have died following a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, prompting immediate calls from city leadership for stricter regulatory oversight of aerial tourism operations. The incident involved a pilot and three Colombian women from the same family who were conducting a sightseeing flight over Tijuca National Park.
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere has requested that Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) intensify its supervision of helicopter flights within the city. In a statement released via social media, Cavaliere expressed solidarity with the victims' families and confirmed that City Hall is prepared to support any necessary safety actions mandated by the federal aviation authority.
The crash occurred near Vista Chinesa, a prominent lookout point within the densely forested national park. The victims were identified by Colombian Consul General Diana Paez as the grandmother, aunt, and cousin of a young girl who was in Rio to celebrate her 15th birthday. The group of six tourists had split into two parties because the aircraft could only accommodate three passengers at a time.
Cavaliere suggested that helicopter tours could be suspended for a period of one to two weeks to allow for the implementation of new safety protocols. He noted that the city has been in contact with ANAC regarding the increasing frequency of these flights and the need to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The tragedy has renewed concerns regarding aviation safety in Rio, following a separate mid-air collision on June 14 that killed six people over the western suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes. While the exact cause of Saturday’s crash remains under investigation, the incident highlights ongoing risks associated with high-density aerial tourism in the region.
