Regulatory Loophole Enables Bare-Knuckle Combat at Ocean Center Ahead of Rockville

The Ocean Center in Daytona Beach hosted a joint event on 6 May combining bare-knuckle boxing with metal music performances to precede the Welcome to Rockville festival. The card featured four fights, including a match between Alex Terrible and Cameron Delano, alongside performances by bands such as Slaughter to Prevail, Black Label Society, Crowbar, and Malevolence. The event operated under a Florida regulatory loophole allowing modified gloves, despite bare-knuckle fighting remaining technically illegal in the state.

This arrangement allows the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship to function within the jurisdiction while maintaining a strict legal boundary. In Florida, strict bare-knuckle fighting, defined as boxing without gloves, remains illegal. However, the Florida Athletic Commission created a regulatory loophole in 2019 allowing modified gloves that expose knuckles, enabling the sport to proceed legally since that year. This framework permits the event to proceed without violating the state's prohibition on un-gloved pugilism.

The legal status of the event highlights a unique position for BKFC in the United States. For more than 100 years, bare-knuckle fighting was a sport that largely became illegal in the 19th century. BKFC became the first organisation to gain legal clearance for sanctioned bare-knuckle fights in the US since 1889. This distinction underscores the significance of the event as a sanctioned occurrence within the modern regulatory landscape.

Erik Magraken, a Canadian attorney and author of Combat Sports Law, commented on the legalisation process, describing it as comical if not outright embarrassing. He noted that while the sport is bloodier than gloved boxing and involves more cuts, it likely causes less brain trauma. This analysis from a legal expert provides context to the regulatory approach taken by the Florida Athletic Commission regarding the modified equipment.

Lynn Flanders, Ocean Center director, confirmed the event aims to create a unique experience connecting live music and combat sports while welcoming visitors to the venue during the festival week. The joint venture between BKFC and Danny Wimmer Presents was designed to complement the energy surrounding the Welcome to Rockville festival, one of the largest rock-metal festivals in North America. The event serves as a precursor to the main festival, offering a distinct experience for attendees.

The card featured notable participants, including Alex Terrible, frontman of Slaughter to Prevail, who competed in a light heavyweight match against Cameron Delano. Terrible is scheduled to headline the Vortex Stage at Rockville on 10 May, presenting a logistical challenge with only four days to recover from the combat event. Other bouts included Jake Bostwick against Roderick Stewart and Sergey Kalinin against Brock Walker, alongside a women's flyweight fight between Taylor Starling and Sydney Smith.
