Reddit to limit Old Reddit access to recent users
The change is due in the next few months, with logged-in moderators exempt. Reddit also plans to end RSS support on 13 November.
Reddit plans to restrict Old Reddit access to logged-in users who have used the classic site within the previous six months. The company says the change, expected in the next few months, is intended to reduce scraping and automated abuse.
Logged-in moderators will be exempt from the recent-use rule. Reddit has not announced an exact start date.
The move follows a login requirement introduced in July. Reddit says that measure helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, while the new rule addresses access by logged-in accounts with no prior use of Old Reddit.
Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim said the change was not about removing Old Reddit, but limiting unauthenticated access and reducing abuse. The company has previously discussed changes to the service, including rebuilding it on a modern technology stack.
Reddit also plans to stop supporting RSS feeds on 13 November. It recommends moderator teams move workflows to supported alternatives, but says there is no replacement for RSS feeds used outside communities users moderate.
