Red Sox to Deploy Mayer at Shortstop Amid Positional Uncertainty
The Boston Red Sox have turned to 2021 first-round pick Marcelo Mayer to fill the shortstop vacancy, following a period of rotational experimentation while Trevor Story’s return timetable remains unclear.

The Boston Red Sox have confirmed that prospect Marcelo Mayer will start at shortstop for Sunday’s contest against the Minnesota Twins, marking his season debut at the position. Interim manager Chad Tracy announced the decision, which addresses a prolonged vacancy at the key infield spot caused by the uncertain return schedule of regular starter Trevor Story.
Mayer, the club’s 2021 first-round draft pick and current everyday starting second baseman, enters the lineup after a period of targeted preparation. Tracy noted that the team began proactively integrating Mayer into shortstop drills during a recent series in Kansas City. The interim manager indicated that while Mayer is tentatively scheduled to play, the club is exploring the possibility of him assuming the role on a more permanent basis, though no definitive commitment has been made.
The appointment follows a recent rotation of players attempting to stabilise the position. Nick Sogard started at shortstop on Friday, followed by Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Saturday, while Andruw Monasterio has also featured in a handful of games at the position. The shift to Mayer represents a move toward a long-term internal solution, as fans have previously identified the young prospect as the shortstop of the future during his progression through the Red Sox system.
Mayer, who has not played shortstop in a competitive game for several months, expressed confidence in his defensive capabilities despite the time away from the position. He stated that while in-game reads may differ from fielding drills, he feels comfortable handling ground balls and throwing to first base, describing shortstop as where he has played his entire life.
Interim bench coach José David Flores is reportedly planning additional work with Mayer before the game to further prepare him for the transition. The move underscores the Red Sox’s ongoing search for a reliable defensive anchor at shortstop while Brayan Bello continues to provide strong pitching performance, currently holding the best earned run average in baseball when the team utilises an opener.
