Red Sox surge into playoff contention with doubleheader sweep of Rays

The victories, comprising a 10-0 rout in the afternoon and a 5-3 win in the evening, moved Boston to a 48-48 record. This marks the first time since their second game of the season that the club has reached a .500 standing. The turnaround is particularly stark given that the Red Sox held the worst record in the American League as recently as June 24.

Under interim manager Chad Tracy, who assumed leadership following the dismissal of Alex Cora earlier in the season, the team has won 16 of its last 18 games. This surge follows a difficult interim period where Boston won only 18 of their next 44 games after Cora’s departure. The current momentum has altered the internal atmosphere, with the club now viewed as a more competitive entity ahead of the trade deadline.

Key performances drove the doubleheader success. Jake Bennett pitched six shutout innings in the opener, supported by a six-run sixth inning. In the evening game, starter Eduardo Rivera was pulled after 2 1/3 innings, requiring seven different pitchers to appear in relief. All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras returned from a five-game suspension during the second game, hitting a home run in his first at-bat to go back-to-back with Wilyer Abreu. The team had gone 5-0 during Contreras' absence.

The Red Sox now face critical upcoming series against division rivals the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. While the club remains a long way from being a comfortable decision at the trade deadline, the recent sweep of the first-place Rays serves as a significant test of their improved form and potential playoff viability.
