Real Madrid pursue Arsenal defender Calafiori as Mourinho targets defensive versatility
Jose Mourinho’s second stint at Real Madrid sees the club prioritise Riccardo Calafiori to fill the void left by David Alaba, though formal negotiations with Arsenal remain pending.

Real Madrid have initiated direct discussions with the agent of Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, signalling a focused effort to secure the Italian’s services for the upcoming summer transfer window. According to transfer journalist Nicolo Schira, Real Madrid officials recently met with Calafiori’s representatives to gauge interest and discuss the possibility of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The pursuit of the 22-year-old is being driven by manager Jose Mourinho, who views Calafiori as a high-priority target for his second stint at the club. The interest is rooted in a professional history between the two; Mourinho previously followed Calafiori’s development during his tenure at AS Roma, where he observed the defender’s tactical adaptability and technical profile.
Calafiori’s appeal lies in his defensive versatility. While naturally suited to centre-back, he is also comfortable operating as a left-back. This dual capability addresses a specific structural need at Real Madrid following the departure of David Alaba. Mourinho’s tactical systems have frequently utilised three central defenders, a formation that aligns with Calafiori’s skill set and allows for fluid rotation across the back line.
The club has formally requested information regarding Calafiori’s availability and current contract status. However, Schira notes that these agent-level talks do not indicate an imminent agreement, nor do they guarantee a transfer. The next phase of the operation requires direct communication with Arsenal, as no formal negotiations between the two clubs have commenced at this stage.
This potential acquisition follows recent defensive reinforcements, including the arrivals of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. Despite these additions, Real Madrid continue to evaluate additional options to solidify their defensive structure. The club remains in the early stages of this process, with the focus currently on establishing contact and assessing the logistical feasibility of a move from the Premier League side.
