Coach Sean McVay said conversations with Garrett after the match led the Rams to change course after managing swelling in the player’s knee during training camp. Garrett has been placed on injured reserve, guaranteeing an absence of at least four games.
Garrett played 61.5 per cent of the Rams’ defensive snaps against San Francisco but recorded no tackles or sacks. The available information does not establish that the match caused the knee problem.
McVay said no recovery timetable was available beyond the injured-reserve minimum, pending the outcome of the procedure. The surgery date and exact nature of the operation were not provided.
Garrett joined the Rams from the Cleveland Browns in June in a major trade involving pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks. After the loss, Garrett said he had not been the player he had been previously and needed to work towards returning to that level.
McVay said Garrett’s absence would not affect the timing of Aaron Donald’s potential return. Donald did not travel with the team and McVay said it was too early to determine whether he would play in the Rams’ next game.
