IPL 2026: Why is RCB captain Rajat Patidar not playing vs Punjab Kings? - EXPLAINED
Defending champions skipper misses Dharamsala fixture but is expected back for Hyderabad clash

Royal Challengers Bengaluru entered their Indian Premier League 2026 fixture against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on May 17, 2026, without their regular captain, Rajat Patidar. The defending champions, who currently lead the points table with 16 points from 12 matches, confirmed that Patidar did not travel with the squad and missed practice sessions ahead of the encounter.

Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has been appointed stand-in captain for the match. Sharma provided an update on Patidar’s status during the toss, confirming that the skipper is recovering well and is expected to return for RCB’s next league-stage match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 22.

Patidar’s absence is a notable shift for RCB, given his strong individual performance this season. The captain has scored 326 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 195, including three half-centuries. In his place, Suyash Sharma has been included in the playing XI, while Romario Shepherd replaces Josh Philippe.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first. Iyer noted that the decision was based on the match conditions rather than statistics, stating that the team would focus on execution regardless of the toss outcome. Punjab Kings also made two changes to their lineup, bringing in Harpreet Brar and Lockie Ferguson.

RCB currently sit atop the IPL 2026 standings with a net run rate of +1.053, having won eight games and lost four. The team’s focus now shifts to maintaining their position at the top of the table while Patidar completes his recovery period before the final league-stage fixture.
