Defending champions face Gujarat Titans in high-stakes playoff clash

Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 on Tuesday at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, with the winner securing a direct berth in the grand finale. The defending champions and their opponents concluded the league stage with identical records of nine wins from 14 matches, with RCB claiming the top position solely on the basis of a superior net run rate.

The contest presents a stark contrast between RCB’s formidable batting depth and GT’s potent bowling attack. RCB’s top order is anchored by Virat Kohli, who has scored 577 runs at a strike rate of 163.82, including a century and four fifties. He is joined by Phil Salt, who returned from a mid-season finger injury to add 202 runs at a strike rate of 168.33. Supporting them are Devdutt Padikkal, with 433 runs, and Rajat Patidar, who has scored 393 runs at a strike rate of 183.64.

Gujarat Titans rely on a bowling lineup spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada, who has taken 24 wickets, and Mohammed Siraj, with 17 wickets. The spin department is bolstered by Rashid Khan, who has claimed 19 wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Jason Holder have contributed 14 and 13 wickets respectively. This attack faces a challenging task against RCB’s explosive batting, particularly in the Powerplay overs where the match is expected to be decided.

GT’s batting strength is led by Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, who occupy the top two spots in the Orange Cap standings with 638 and 616 runs respectively. Jos Buttler has also been instrumental, scoring 469 runs at a strike rate of 155.29. However, the team’s middle order lacks depth, with Washington Sundar being the only other notable contributor, having scored 303 runs at a strike rate of 153.80.

RCB’s new-ball attack, led by Purple Cap holder Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 24 wickets and Josh Hazlewood, will look to exploit GT’s reliance on the top order. The Powerplay battle between Kohli and Rabada, as well as Salt and Siraj, is set to be pivotal. Whichever side gains the upper hand in these initial overs will likely dictate the flow of the match and secure their place in the final.
