The Tampa Bay Rays have become the first Major League Baseball team to secure a 2026 postseason berth, defeating the Houston Astros 3–1 in St Petersburg, Florida.

Junior Caminero ended the game with a two-run home run, his 40th of the season, sending Tampa Bay into the playoffs. ESPN reported that the result guaranteed the Rays at least the third American League wild-card position.

Tampa Bay is now 88–59 and had held the American League’s best record for 115 days this season. The Rays began the game three matches ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East.

The playoff berth is Tampa Bay’s first in three seasons. The Rays lost both games of their 2023 wild-card series against Texas.

The Rays are still pursuing the American League East title, along with the league’s best record and a first-round bye. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Tampa Bay clinched earlier than any team since the Atlanta Braves secured their place on 10 September 2023.
