Ravens defensive coordinator likens Saints quarterback to Josh Allen ahead of Week 2 clash

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has drawn a direct comparison between New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough and Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen, citing the second-year signal-caller’s dual-threat capabilities. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the teams’ Week 2 matchup, Weaver described Shough as "a poor man’s Josh Allen" in a positive light, emphasising the quarterback’s physical tools and potential for extended plays.
Weaver noted that Shough possesses "all the arm talent in the world" and argued that the player does not receive sufficient credit for his athleticism. The defensive coordinator stated that the Ravens must remain conscious of Shough’s scrambling ability, particularly in the red zone, in a manner similar to how they prepare for Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson.
The comments follow a strong Week 1 performance by Shough, who threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns in an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions. Despite falling behind 21-0 with under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter and throwing two interceptions, Shough led a comeback that forced the game into extra time before the Saints ultimately lost 31-30.
Weaver, who is in his first season as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator under head coach Jesse Minter, observed that the Saints have upgraded their offensive line and possess tremendous skill players. He suggested that as Shough gains more repetitions in the scheme, his confidence will grow, stating that "sky’s the limit" for the quarterback.
The defensive coordinator, who previously served in the same role for the Miami Dolphins, recalled being impressed by Shough during a Week 13 matchup last season. Shough, who was selected with the No. 40 pick in the NFL Draft, started nine games last season, recording 2,384 passing yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 67.6% of his passes.
The Ravens enter the contest following a 41-23 road victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Weaver’s assessment of Shough’s development reflects a broader institutional focus on the Saints’ offensive infrastructure, which has been rebuilt around the quarterback’s unique blend of passing and rushing talent.
