Rashford’s United exit clause expires, complicating transfer landscape
With the 28-year-old forward currently representing England at the World Cup and having not played for Manchester United since December 2024, the expiry of the clause significantly alters the club’s leverage in potential summer dealings.

The likelihood of Marcus Rashford remaining at Manchester United has increased following the expiration of his £40 million contract exit clause. According to reporting by The Athletic, the lapse of this provision means that any future transfer of the 28-year-old forward now requires formal negotiation between parties, removing the mechanism for an automatic departure.
Rashford is currently on international duty with England, who are scheduled to face France in the World Cup third-place playoff on Saturday. The national team’s campaign concluded in the semi-finals following a defeat to Argentina, a result that extended a 60-year wait for a final appearance for the men’s side. Rashford started two of England’s seven tournament matches and scored a goal as a substitute against Croatia.
Prior to his current international obligations, Rashford spent the previous season on loan at Barcelona. He made 49 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish club, scoring 14 goals. Despite these performances, Barcelona declined to trigger a £26 million option to sign him permanently. Instead, the club pursued and secured England teammate Anthony Gordon in a deal valued at £69 million.
Although Rashford has expressed a desire to return to Camp Nou, a move back to Barcelona is considered unlikely given the current contractual and financial context. He has not featured for Manchester United since December 2024 and is expected to return to the club for pre-season training following a three-week holiday after the World Cup.
Rashford remains one of the most prominent products of Manchester United’s academy. Since making his senior debut in February 2016, he has accumulated 426 appearances for the club, scoring 138 goals. The expiry of the exit clause now places the onus on the club and the player to determine the next phase of his career, with no offers currently on the table.
