Roma issue deadline for Summerville as salary impasse stalls €40 million deal
AS Roma face a critical juncture in their transfer strategy, with Dutch winger Jack Summerville’s return to Europe triggering a final negotiation window amid significant wage disagreements.

AS Roma have moved to accelerate their transfer operations, issuing a strict deadline for Dutch winger Jack Summerville to provide a definitive response to the club’s latest offer. The Italian side intends to conclude the acquisition before the weekend, with the ultimatum set to expire by next weekend or Monday at the latest. This urgency follows a difficult start to the transfer window, marked by the departure of Callum Greenwood and the loss of Mert Celik to Juventus.
The club’s administrative pressure is compounded by the failure to retain three other players with expiring contracts by July 17, despite requests from manager Gian Piero Gasperini. With the squad undergoing a significant shake-up, Roma management is unwilling to delay further. Summerville is currently returning to Europe from a vacation in Miami and is expected to discuss his future with his agents within the next few hours to determine his course of action.
At the heart of the stalled negotiations is a substantial salary impasse. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Summerville is demanding an annual wage of €6 million. In contrast, Roma’s sporting director Claudio D’Amico has capped the offer at €4.5 million plus performance bonuses. The club’s stance is firm, driven by a directive to maintain financial and structural balance within the dressing room.
Gasperini has emphasised the necessity of preserving this internal equilibrium as he prepares to integrate new personnel into the squad. The management believes that exceeding the proposed wage structure would disrupt this balance, which is viewed as a priority for the upcoming season. Consequently, the club has adopted a hard line, indicating that if Summerville does not accept the terms, Roma will pursue alternative targets.
Should the player agree to the financial conditions, D’Amico is scheduled to travel to West Ham to finalise the transaction. The proposed deal values the 2001-born winger at approximately €40 million. The outcome of these immediate discussions will determine whether Roma secures a key reinforcement or must pivot its strategy in the final days of the transfer window.
