Rams’ Melbourne loss exposes travel, injury and performance questions
Fox Sports examines whether Sean McVay can revive the Los Angeles Rams after a 20-point defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne.
The Los Angeles Rams’ status as an offseason “super team” is under pressure after a seven-point performance and a 20-point loss to the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Fox Sports reported that the Rams travelled from Los Angeles to Melbourne about 28 hours before the NFL’s international opener. The 49ers reportedly arrived a week earlier, placing McVay’s travel planning at the centre of the post-match assessment.
The Rams also lost Myles Garrett, who was placed on injured reserve with a left knee injury after undergoing arthroscopic surgery. He is expected to miss at least four weeks, according to the report.
Garrett recorded no tackles or sacks and one pressure in Week 1. Fox Sports said the defensive player had been managing the knee issue since the start of training camp.
The defensive setback was compounded by the Rams’ offensive struggles. An attack that reportedly led the NFL in scoring in 2025 and remains led by reigning MVP Matthew Stafford produced only seven points against San Francisco.
McVay also said he was uncertain whether Aaron Donald would play against the New York Giants in Week 2. The Rams’ response will now be shaped by questions over player availability, preparation and whether the team can convert its pre-season expectations into consistent performance.
