Rams coach rejects 'invisible deadline' for Aaron Donald's retirement decision

Aaron Donald has completed a second workout with the Los Angeles Rams this summer, appearing on the league transaction wire as he evaluates a potential return from retirement. The former defensive tackle, who stepped away in March 2024 following a decade-long career with the franchise, is currently assessing his physical readiness for the upcoming National Football League season.

Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed Donald’s status following the team’s preseason victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, stating he would not impose a strict timeline or deadline on the veteran’s decision. McVay emphasised that Donald has earned the right to clarity on his future, noting that the team is not yet at a point where a final determination can be made.

Although NFL regulations require teams to trim their rosters to 53 players by 30 August, McVay reiterated that he will not force a deadline on Donald. The coach acknowledged that while the organisation has identified "loose" dates for resolution, they will not apply unnecessary pressure on the player should unforeseen circumstances arise.

Internal discussions remain ongoing as Donald evaluates whether he can meet his personal benchmarks, including the ability to "stack back-to-back days." McVay described these talks as tentative, noting that Donald knows himself best regarding his physical capabilities and the demands of the upcoming schedule.

Donald’s workout process began earlier this month, following the Rams' acquisition of Myles Garrett in a trade in June. McVay expressed satisfaction with the current roster composition regardless of the outcome, stating that while he feels great about the team as it stands, Donald would add value if he decides to return.
