Three-Time Defensive Player of the Year May Un-Retire After Rams Land Myles Garrett
McVay confirms interest in retired tackle as trade reshapes defensive line

The Los Angeles Rams have significantly altered the NFL landscape by acquiring defensive end Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. The trade package includes edge rusher Jared Verse alongside a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round selection, and a 2029 third-round pick. The acquisition has instantly shifted betting markets, with FanDuel listing the Rams as +550 favourites to win Super Bowl LXI.

Rams head coach Sean McVay indicated that the organisation would welcome the return of retired defensive tackle Aaron Donald if he is interested in un-retiring. Donald, who stepped away in March 2024 at age 32, has stated he is “flirting with the idea” of a comeback. His potential return is motivated by the opportunity to play alongside Garrett and the fact that Super Bowl LXI will be hosted at SoFi Stadium.

McVay confirmed he maintains close contact with Donald and had discussed the Garrett acquisition with him prior to the trade becoming public. The coach noted that Donald, now 35, could still perform at a high level if he chooses to return. Donald has since texted that he is considering the move, citing the Super Bowl being held at his home ground as a key factor.

Speculation regarding Donald’s status intensified following hints from former teammate Michael Brockers that the tackle had been training in case a reason to return emerged. Donald also posted workout videos on Instagram with the hashtag “#ready” in the days before the trade was confirmed. He previously left $30 million in guaranteed money on the table when he retired, citing a loss of passion for playing a full season.

Donald is scheduled to meet with McVay and Rams executives later this week to discuss a potential comeback. His career statistics include 111 sacks, 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight first-team All-Pro nods, and three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Garrett arrives with 125.5 career sacks, having recorded 23 sacks in the 2025 season.
