Raiders coach Kubiak: Mendoza’s starting role hinges on individual performance

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak has stated that the decision on when to start first-year quarterback Fernando Mendoza will be determined by the rookie’s individual performance, rather than the overall state of the team’s offense. Mendoza, who was selected first overall in the NFL Draft, is expected to serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins when the season opens on 13 September against the Miami Dolphins.

Kubiak addressed the numerous uncertainties surrounding the Raiders’ offensive unit, which includes an unproven offensive line, a receiving corps without a clear-cut number one option, and a running back position currently occupied by a rookie. Despite these challenges, the coach emphasised that quarterback play is a collective effort. “Whoever is playing quarterback for us, it’s a team thing,” Kubiak said. “It’s not the QB playing well and everyone else is not or the other way around.”

The context for this decision is significant, as the Raiders’ offense was statistically the worst in the league last season, averaging 14.2 points and 245.2 yards per game. Management has attempted to address the offensive line’s deficiencies by signing three-time Pro Bowl centre Tyler Linderbaum to the richest contract ever for an interior offensive lineman. Additionally, left tackle Kolton Miller, who missed all but four games last season due to an ankle injury, is considered one of the league’s best players at his position.

However, questions remain regarding the offensive line’s improvement, particularly at right guard, where Jackson Powers-Johnson is competing with Caleb Rogers for the starting role. The receiving corps also faces scrutiny, with Kubiak criticising the group for assignment errors following a 22-20 preseason victory over the Houston Texans. The coach noted that the issues extend beyond the receivers, requiring other players to step up.

A further complication arises at the running back position, where second-year starter Ashton Jeanty suffered an injury in practice on Sunday. Jeanty was unable to put pressure on his right leg and was helped off the field, with the team remaining quiet about his prognosis. Consequently, rookie Mike Washington Jr., drafted in the fourth round, is currently taking first-team snaps in practice.

As the Raiders prepare for the upcoming season, the coaching staff faces the task of integrating a high-profile rookie quarterback into an offense that is still resolving key positional battles. Kubiak’s insistence on evaluating Mendoza based on his individual play suggests a focus on the quarterback’s development, regardless of the surrounding circumstances.
